Man Convicted in 1990 Charlotte Murder set for January 2015 Release

A Charlotte man convicted of the murder of a popular Johnson C. Smith disc jockey will be freed from state prison in January.

In 1990, a jury considered the death penalty for James Jeffries before sentencing him to life in prison for the 1986 shooting death of Anthony Scott McClam. First-degree murder convictions now carry a mandatory penalty of life without parole. But under sentencing rules at the time of his trial, Jeffries qualifies for release.

State officials approved Jeffries’ parole Thursday under a scholastic and vocational program known as Mutual Agreement Parole Program, or MAPP. Michael Gordon
