Man Shot, Killed by Victim He was Attempting to Rob in Charlotte on May 11, 2014

From The Charlotte Observer by Steve Lyttle, May 13, 2014

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a man died late Monday night, May 11, 2014, after being shot by a man he was trying to rob.

Police have identified the dead man as Darlanski Lamar Sherrill, 22. They said he died a short time after a report of an attempted robbery in the 1100 block of Jordans Pond Lane, off Valleydale Road in northwest Charlotte.

Investigators said the series of events began a few minutes after 9 p.m., when they received a call about an armed robbery. The person who called said he was in his yard when he was confronted by two men. He said one of the men, armed with a gun, forced him into his house and tried to rob him.

The man said the suspect beat him with the gun. But the caller apparently got his hands on a gun, because he told police he was able to shoot his attacker.

A short time later, about 8 miles away, a University City Division police officer was on patrol and observed a vehicle driving erratically. The police officer tried stopping the car, but the vehicle wouldn’t stop.

The officer continued to follow the car and saw a man jump from the vehicle’s passenger side on West W.T. Harris Boulevard near McCullough Drive. Officers found the man and determined he had been shot.

Medic arrived and took the man, later identified as Sherrill, to Carolinas Medical Center. He died at the hospital.

Other CMPD officers, meanwhile, were able to stop the car a short distance away. The driver, 34-year-old Don Antonio Morrison, was interviewed by detectives and then charged with armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Nothing was reported stolen.

Investigators said Sherrill was shot during the robbery, and they said Morrison was taking Sherrill to the hospital when police tried to stop the vehicle.

Mecklenburg County jail records indicate both Morrison and Sherrill had previous arrests.

Police said the district attorney’s office will determine whether any other charges are filed in the case. Detectives canvassed the area along Jordans Pond Lane overnight, looking for possible witnesses in the case.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call detectives, at 704-432-TIPS, or leave information with Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
