Man Who Fired at CMPD Officers on March 20, 2014 is Arrested

From http://www.wcnc.com, March 22, 2014

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have issued an arrest warrant for the man they say fired shots at an undercover officer in northwest Charlotte Thursday night, March 20, 2014.

CMPD obtained an arrest warrant for Jimmie Harris, Jr., 25, on the charges of attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was arrested by CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team on Friday afternoon.

Harris also has outstanding warrants on an unrelated attempted murder charge out of South Carolina, police say.

Police say Harris attempted to rob an undercover officer and an informant in the 1100 block of Jordans Pond Lane just before 8 p.m.  Harris then got into a vehicle that a female was driving and they tried to drive away, according to police.

“Additional officers attempted to stop the vehicle at which time the vehicle stopped and the suspect began to exit the vehicle and shoot at officers,” according to a news release from CMPD.  “An officer returned fire at the suspect.  The suspect then continued to run away from the scene.  Detectives have concluded that during the suspects escape he shot and killed a dog that belonged to a civilian.”

Officers set up a perimeter to search Harris, but so far no arrests have been made.  The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team is actively searching for the suspect.

Detectives with the Homicide/ADW Unit are conducting the shooting investigation while Detectives with the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether or not CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident, according to the news release.

The officer’s name has not been released due to the nature of the undercover assignment.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.  Detective Burkard is the lead detective assigned to the case.  In addition, you may also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Officials said fake agents call people claiming they owe taxes then demand money and threaten arrest, deportation and the loss of a business.

“It’s too difficult to get scammed into something you know little about, and taxes scare everybody,” said Paul Durso, a wealth management consultant.

Officials said IRS agents usually contact people by mail, and real agents don’t demand money by debit card or wire transfers.

CMPD Program Helps Keep Young Offenders Out of Trouble

From http://www.wsoctv.com, March 19, 2014

A program that puts accused criminals in the classroom instead of jail is gaining momentum.

CMPD youth diversion program
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department created a youth diversion program for young first offenders.

The program kicked off in January 2013, and is designed to help children make better choices and think about their future goals.

“Rather than starting an arrest history and pushing them through the criminal justice system, why not give them an opportunity to make a turn?” said Sgt. Celestine Ratliff, supervisor of the program.

Nearly 900 children have been through the program.
