IRS Warns of Scam, Fake Agents

From, March 20, 2014

Eyewitness News learned more than 20,000 taxpayers have been targeted by fake IRS agents.

Officials said fake agents call people claiming they owe taxes then demand money and threaten arrest, deportation and the loss of a business.

“It’s too difficult to get scammed into something you know little about, and taxes scare everybody,” said Paul Durso, a wealth management consultant.

Officials said IRS agents usually contact people by mail, and real agents don’t demand money by debit card or wire transfers.
