Top 5 Crimes of the Week of March 9, 2014 From the Charlotte Region

It’s been a busy week in news for the Charlotte region. Here’s  a look at this week’s top crime stories.

1. Suspect dead after killing parents, officer in Burke County: A long and complex manhunt for a man police say shot and killed his mother, father and a U.S. Forestry Service officer ended with the suspect’s death on Wednesday.

2. Python reported stolen from Charlotte school: Officials are still searching for a ball python that they say was taken from a Charlotte school science lab this week. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools spokeswoman confirmed the snake was stolen from the lab at Northwest School of the Arts.

3. Thieves used forklift to steal ATM in York County: Thieves used a hot-wired forklift to steal an ATM in York County on Wednesday night, authorities say. When deputies arrived on scene, they reported that the ATM was missing and that there was a large, orange forklift still running.

4. Nearly 60 dogs rescued from suspected puppy mill: Dozens of dogs were seized from a suspected puppy mill this week in Iredell County. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office served the search warrant on a property and located poodles and maltese dogs, along with puppies, living in “deplorable” conditions.

5. Child, 2, present at working meth lab:  A Lancaster woman is behind bars after a medical call for help led to the discovery of a meth lab, police say. Around noon on Wednesday, emergency first responders were dispatched to a home in the 1400 block of Crestfield Drive on the report of a potential overdose.
