Mecklenburg Prosecutors Say DNA Will Tie Hurd to 2008 Triple Murders

Jurors in the triple murder trial of Justin Hurd were shown a bent and broken knife that may have been used in the killings of three people in Charlotte.

Prosecutors: DNA will tie Hurd to triple murders

Hurd faces a possible sentence of death if he is convicted of the killings back in February of 2008.

Crime scene investigators from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department showed the jury photos of a Cadillac Escalade that was parked in the garage of a burned-out home on Patricia Ryan Drive on February 4.

Investigators believe the house was doused with gasoline and set on fire to cover-up the murders that were committed inside.

Investigators who went into the house after the fire found the bodies of Kevin Young and Kinshasa Wagstaff. Both had had their throats cut.

Crime Scene Investigator Patricia Amos showed the jury plastic bags from the Escalade that contained a red gas can and a silver knife that she described.

“Bent, and it has apparent blood on it, and the tip is broken off,” she told the jury.

Hours after the first two bodies were found, police found the body of Wagstaff”s niece, Jasmine Hines in Huntersville.

The prosecution says it can tie Justin Hurd to both crime scenes through his DNA.

Amos said that no fingerprints were found on the Escalade, but the items from the car were swabbed for DNA.

During the afternoon court session, more pictures of the victim’s bodies were shown to the jury, and again some friends and family members left the court to wait outside in the hall.
