A police source told NBC Charlotte an 82-year-old woman who was killed in south Charlotte died of blunt force trauma after she was beaten.

Police say the body of a woman Ina Feldman was  found by her son inside her home at a retirement community on Tuesday. The community is located next to Carmel Country Club.

Trish Doyle, another of Feldman’s neighbor said she returned from picking up her granddaughter at 10 a.m.  She came home to find the commotion and police cars outside her townhome.

“I was totally shocked. I absolutely can’t make sense of that. I have myself always felt incredibly safe here, safe in the environment and neighbors are good about checking in,” she said.

According to neighbors, Feldman moved into the neighborhood with her late husband several years ago.

Doyle says Feldman’s son and his wife live in the same retirement community and often check on her.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, CMPD Lieutenant Travis Pardue said, “We want to be there to ease the public’s mind about our presence and their security, and we’re also trying to collect information at the same time.

Police went door to door Wednesday in the Carmel South community. Now neighbors are feeling uneasy about their own security.

“It is unnerving because my parents live here and this is more of an elderly community, and I know it’s really unnerving for them, ” said neighbor Warren Turnipse.

Neighbors in the Carmel South community are feeling uneasy while police are being tight-lipped about how Ines Feldman was killed in her home.
