CMPD Concerned About People “Hanging Out” at CATS Transit Center

From by Brigida Mack, February 6, 2014

Thinking of heading uptown to just hang out at the transit center? Charlotte Mecklenburg police want teens to know it’s a bad idea.

WBTV has uncovered a troubling trend of teens seeing the mass transit hub as their newest hangout.

Not only that, Capt. Mike Campagna says they were coming to center city to fight.

“Setting up fights anywhere is a bad idea but I can assure you that coming uptown to do is going to be that much worse,” he promised.

Worse given all the police cameras trained on the center and surrounding area. CMPD began using that technology to curb the problem before it escalates — like the night of deadly shooting in uptown last December where surveillance video caught a group of teens scattering after the shots rang out.

“Using camera system inside the transit and surrounding areas to identify who these kids are, then we went to their homes,” Campagna said. “We knocked on their doors and said, ‘hey, we know what you’re doing and we don’t approve of it’.”

Campagna also said their door-to-door tactic is working which is why they’re putting teens — and their parents — on notice.

“We know you are, we know your faces and we know where you live and where your parents are,” he bluntly pointed out. “So when it comes time, we’re gonna hold you accountable and we’re gonna hold your parents accountable as well.”

That’s exactly what Cristina Reveron, a mom who uses mass transit every day, wants to hear.

“I was one of those hard moms,” she admitted. “You know I was like don’t do it. You know we’re responsible for our teenagers. You know, we’re responsible.”

CMPD is also working with CATS and its privately contracted security force, GS4, to make sure there are no more issues at the transit center.
