Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a suspicious man that drove up to a bus stop in northeast Charlotte and tried to lure a girl into his car.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Natasha Perkins, the mother of the girl who was approached by the man, “She started screaming and running to me.”
Police said the incident happened around 6 a.m. Monday at a bus stop near Tom Hunter Road and Hidden Forest Drive.
A 12-year-old girl told police she was waiting for her school bus when a car approached and a man yelled to her to “get in”.
The girl attends elementary school in Huntersville, and was the only one standing at the stop at the time of the incident.
“We were walking to the stop when I decided to pull my (garbage) bin to the curb,” said Perkins, who told her daughter to walk up the street, “’Cause I didn’t want to miss the bus.”
Perkins lives several houses from the bus stop and said she could see her daughter from where she stood.
The girl told police she screamed and the car drove off. She told police that the man was driving a white four-door car. She also said the man appeared heavyset.
A spokesperson for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said they are working with police and are monitoring the situation.
Police said they are patrolling the area as they continue to investigate.
