Mecklenburg Prosecutors Seeking Death Penalty in CMS Guidance Counselor’s October 4, 2013 Killing

Mecklenburg Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for a Charlotte man charged with killing his estranged wife. David Fields is accused of murdering Marcia Winningham on October 4, 2013.

Winningham was a guidance counselor at Hopewell High School, and was found dead in her house from gunshot wounds. There were two additional victims, but both survived.

Several days after the suspected murder, police arrested Fields in Virginia. He was charged with murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill. Fields was in court today and prosecutors will seek the death penalty if he is accused of first-degree murder.
