CMPD Elite Task Force Rallies Around Wounded Officer

By MICHELLE BOUDIN / NBC Charlotte, January 7, 2014

They are the best of the best, because they go after the worst of the worst.
Chief Rodney Monroe says, “These guys have by far one of the most dangerous jobs.”

Officer Shane Page helped create VCAT, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, back in 2006.

“They go after all of our murderers, armed robbers, sexual offenders. They’re the ones that track them, identify them and ultimately apprehend them,” Monroe explains.

That’s what Page and a team were doing in Fort Mill Thursday morning, when police say suspected armed robber James Lewis shot page.

The Citadel grad and father of two was hit once in the chest and once in the shoulder.

“He just missed a major artery by millimeters. It could be a different story,” Chief Monroe said of the officer’s injuries.

VCAT is allowed to go into other states to arrest fugitives because they work with the feds on the Safe Street Task Force. The unit is so successful they’ve made more than 3,100 arrests.

“This is the team that we use religiously to go after the worst offenders and they do it quite well.”
This same team suffered a similar setback in 2006 when they were trying to serve a warrant and Officer Kayvan Hazrati was shot in the head.

Officer Page was awarded the Medal of Valor for bravery that year after he helped get his wounded teammate to safety.

Now the VCAT team is rallying around him.

“He’s doing well, as well as to be expected with two gunshot wounds, both serious. Doctors believe he’ll make a recovery.”

Officer Page has been with CMPD since 2000.
