Police will hold a conference at 3 p.m. today at Police Headquarters to discuss the need for the communities help in finding Givens.

Givens should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

Gist, 38, was shot and killed Friday afternoon in the 2100 block of Beatties Ford Road near LaSalle Street in northwest Charlotte.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting wasn’t a random act, as the assailant and the victim appear to have known each other.

It’s not clear why Gist was in Charlotte. Police have not said where he was from, but a public records search shows his most recent address was in Columbia.

Records show in the late 1990s that Givens served about three years in a North Carolina federal prison for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Gist had a pending case in Columbia after he was charged with breach of trust, which is an extension of larceny, in 2011.

On Monday, police said Givens has outstanding warrants for murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats.

He has an extensive violent arrest history that includes convictions for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, use of a firearm during drug trafficking, weapon offenses, felony drug offenses and probation violations, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-8477 and speak directly to a homicide unit detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
