Police arrested and charged 70 motorists for driving while intoxicated in Mecklenburg County Oct. 25 to Oct. 31, netting more suspects than any other county during the statewide Halloween “Booze It & Lose It” campaign.
Statewide, 842 motorists were charged with driving while intoxicated during the campaign, according to figures released Friday by the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
The top five counties with the most number of DWI arrests also included Wake and Forsyth counties, each with 52 arrests, followed by Cumberland County with 41 arrests and Guilford County with 40.
Local and state law enforcement officers also issued 33,472 traffic and criminal citations statewide. Police issued 2,137 safety belt and 360 child passenger safety violations; 9,015 speeding violations; and 971 drug charges.
Officers also arrested 911 fugitives and recovered 52 stolen vehicles.
