Man Who Hit CMPD Officer with Car After Stealing from Home Depot Arrested

Police in Charlotte have arrested a man they say hit an officer with his car as he drove out of a Home Depot parking lot with items he had stolen from the store.

The incident was reported on Tuesday at 8:12 p.m. at the Home Depot on the 9500 block of Albemarle Road, according to the report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police say 49-year-old Earl Fields of Charlotte was followed out of the store by a police officer who witnessed Fields steal the merchandise.

When the officer tried to arrest Fields, he resisted and hit the officer with his vehicle as he drove out of the parking lot, according to the report.

The officer suffered minor injuries.

Fields was taken into custody several hours later.

He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, two counts of misdemeanor larceny, second degree trespassing, resisting public officer, driving while license revoked and felony hit and run causing injury.

Fields was placed in the Mecklenburg County Jail.
