Charlotte Man, 63, Disarms Would-Be Robber

by GLENN COUNTS / NBC Charlotte, October 16, 2013

There was a life and death struggle involving a 63-year-old man and a robber armed with a double barrel shotgun.

The incident occurred Tuesday night at the victim’s Whitehall Drive home in west Charlotte.

“When I opened up the door the front of the gun barrel came straight through the door, that’s when I grabbed the front of the barrel,” said the man who did not want to be identified.

At that point, the gun was pointed at his chest at point blank range.

“Just so happened they did not pull the trigger; [they] gave me a chance to straighten that gun up to the ceiling,” said the victim.

The living room was in disarray from the struggle, and at one point the shotgun went off twice, leaving a hole in a blind and window sill.

The victim was able to keep the gun pointed away from his direction, saving his life.

The victim has lived in this home for 45 years. He suffers from diabetes and congestive heart disease, but something gave him the strength to fight off a much younger robber.

“I just thank God for having strength. I don’t want to wrestle nobody, but just to tussle with somebody that’s got a gun in my face– a lot of people don’t want to take on that challenge, but nowadays people will shoot you even when you put your hands up.”

The man says he went to open his door at 11 p.m.; because he had never been the victim of a crime, he didn’t expect this kind of surprise.

Police are still looking for the gunman, if he’s not caught soon, the victim fears the worst.

“Either he’s gonna hurt somebody or somebody is going to hurt him.”

The suspect ran off after the victim’s 55-year-old wife ran to the living room and screamed you are not going to hurt my husband.

Police continue to look for him.
