Two teenagers were arrested Sunday and charged in the shooting of an off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer during an apparent break-in at the officer’s apartment.

Kevin Watson McClary, 19, and Mauricio Gabriel Salazar-Peiti, 17, were taken into custody after a daylong investigation.

Police said McClary was the person who broke into Officer Jon Dunham’s apartment on Montcrest Drive around 6 a.m. Sunday and shot Dunham in the shoulder.

Dunham remained hospitalized Monday in stable condition.

McClary was arrested without incident, police said, and charged with attempted first-degree murder and other assault and burglary offenses. McClary was also wanted on unrelated robbery warrants.

McClary was being held without bond on the attempted murder charge. Jail records said McClary was arrested in June for breaking and entering. He was arrested four times in 2010 and 2011, the records said.

Salazar-Peiti was charged with being an accessory after the fact. His bond was set at $152,500 and jail records show the teen is being held on a federal immigration detainer.

Officer Keith Trietley, a police department spokesma, said “additional charges are pending” for both teenagers.

Residents of the Emerald Bay apartment complex said Officer Dunham had only recently moved into the community near Old Pineville Road and Archdale Drive.

A police statement said a suspect “forced his way” into Dunham’s apartment “and took property.” The officer confronted the suspect and was shot.

The officer’s son was also in the apartment but was not hurt, police said.

Dunham has been on the force since August 2008 and is currently assigned to patrol in the Metro Division. Dunham was named “Officer of the Month” in March 2013.
