Off-Duty CMPD Officer Shot in South Charlotte

From by Leslie Mayes, October 13, 2013

Police are investigating an early morning shooting that left one Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer shot.

It happened on Montcrest Drive in South Charlotte.

The off-duty officer was shot at Emerald Bay Apartments shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

Police are identifying that officer as Jon Dunham.

CMPD officials said the officer who was shot does live here on the property. Cops were called this morning on the report of an assault with a deadly weapon. When they arrived, Dunham told police he was involved in an altercation with someone he didn’t know and that person shot him before fleeing on foot.

Dunham was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he’s being treated for non life threatening injuries. He’s a five-year veteran of the department.

Police are currently still searching for that suspect, who they believe may be armed. All morning long CMPD helicopters and the department’s k-9 unit have been canvassing the grounds of this apartment complex.

They’ve cordoned off several areas of the complex. This is still a very active scene.
