Police have identified a man shot and killed by campus police at N.C. Central University as Tracy Daquan Bost, a 22-year-old from Charlotte.

Authorities say Bost was shot after he fired a shotgun blast at officers who were approaching him. Police said he matched the description of a man wanted by Durham police in connection with a burglary and armed robbery.

Campus police received a report from Durham Police that one of the suspects had gotten off a public bus near campus. They ordered a lockdown because the man was thought to be armed.

They found Bost near the corner of Cecil and Lincoln streets, and he drew a shotgun from the waist of his pants when they began talking to him, according to an account released by NCCU officials Tuesday.

The man fired toward police, and they shot back, according to the university, and the man ran into a wooded area.

The police dog tracked the man to an area near the School of Education, and police again demanded he surrender. He fired again, and police shot him, the university said.

The three NCCU police officers involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave and the investigation has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation — standard steps in officer-involved shootings.

Little seems to be known about Bost besides his lengthy criminal record. Mary Ines, who identified herself as his adoptive grandmother, said he was adopted as a child, and that his biological father lived in Charlotte. But she said she hadn’t talked to him in years. Other family members couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.
