CMPD Increases Patrols Following Bloody Labor Day Weekend

Five murders in five days makes for one of the most violent holiday stretches in Charlotte history, and Tuesday afternoon Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police addressed the issue.

Police patrols increase following bloody holiday weekend

“High risk lifestyles, poor decisions in dealing with acquaintances who are apt to seek guns to settle disputes are all contributing factors here,” said Deputy Chief Kerr Putney.

He said none of the cases are connected, but three of them are drug related.

The rash began Thursday at 4 p.m. with a murder on Kings Ridge Drive. Sunday was an especially violent day, with three killings starting just after midnight on Trinity Road, followed by a shooting at the El Gavilan Club on Driftwood and ending at 10:25 p.m. with a murder on Manning Road.

The last murder occurred Tuesday morning around 2, with another nightclub shooting at 124 Club on Atando Avenue.

Police say these types of crime are difficult to prevent because the suspects know each other, and there is a drug connection.

“So the public at large has very little to be afraid of. In situations like these, if you know who you are dealing with and you’re not dealing with people who are involved in drugs or risky behavior, you’re a lot less likely to be a victim,” said Putney.

Because of this weekend, this year’s murder pace is ahead of last year, 35 to 32. Investigators break down the causes this way: 15 arguments, 8 drug related, 6 unknown, 3 robbery, 2 domestic and 1 gang related.

Police say they plan to step up patrols in the neighborhoods most affected by this weekend’s violence.

“What I can assure you– go to any of these locations, you’re going to see us there frequently and intently over the next few days,” said the deputy chief.
