Driver Charged in Pedestrian Fatality on Independence Blvd.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said speed, alcohol and drugs played a role in a deadly pedestrian accident on Independence Boulevard early Friday morning.

Police said 29-year-old Marcus Lofton is being charged with driving while impaired and could face more charges.

Lofton was driving his 2007 Toyota Camry when he hit a pedestrian in the 1100 block of Independence Boulevard around 3:15 a.m.

Lofton was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck the pedestrian with the left front bumper, throwing the pedestrian onto the hood, window and roof of the vehicle, according to police.

Police said Lofton continued to drive about a mile before stopping on Briar Creek Road.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic. The identity of the victim has not been released.

Lofton was taken to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries.  Police reopened all lanes on Independence Boulevard around 6:15 a.m.
