The FBI is investigating a robbery in the middle of the day at a busy shopping center in Steele Creek.

Authorities said a white man wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a bandana over his nose and mouth pepper-sprayed the driver of an armored truck driver.

The man was also wearing a long-sleeved gray shirt and light-colored cargo pants.

From Chopper Nine Skyzoom, cameras could see the police tape and officers surround that truck at the Bank of America on South Tryon soon after it happened just after noon.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s police helicopter was visible in the air as they searched for a suspect.

“This is a shock to us,” Rene Julbe said as he stopped by the bank. He said he moved to Charlotte from New York City to live somewhere safer. He said he won’t wait in the car anymore as his wife walks inside the bank.

“It’s concerning,” he said. “It’s so close to home.”

The FBI said the driver was out of the vehicle servicing an ATM when the suspect pulled up next to him in a gray or silver Jeep Grand Cherokee. Police said he sprayed the driver with pepper spray.

Then authorities said he grabbed the driver’s courier bag and drove off. They do not believe the bag had any money inside.

Brandon Smith stopped by the bank with his mother. He said they use that ATM all the time.

“It’s so peaceful over here,” he said. “I never would have thought something like that would have happened out in this area.”

The FBI said the driver received some medical attention for his exposure to the chemicals, but police believe he will be OK.

Anyone with information regarding this case is requested to contact the FBI at 704-672-6100 or Charlotte-Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
