Neighbor Helps CMPD Arrest 3 Teens After Break-In

From The Charlotte Observer By Steve Lyttle, April 23, 2013

Police say an alert neighbor helped officers arrest three young men Sunday morning in connection with a home burglary in northwest Charlotte.

According to police, a witness called 911 about 10 a.m. and reported seeing two men walking slowly in front of a house in the 1800 block of Russell Avenue. The witness reported seeing the two young men then run into the back yard of the home, where they were joined by a third young male.

Michael Tinsley, 18, and two 15-year-old males were arrested Sunday and charged with burglarizing a house in northwest Charlotte, police say. (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police photo.)

The witness gave Charlotte-Mecklenburg police a good description of the three men, authorities say.Officers arrived at the home, in a neighborhood between Beatties Ford Road and Interstate 77, south of LaSalle Street, and said they saw two young men leaving the house through a side door. Police took those two men into custody and said they found a third young man nearby.

Police say all of the items taken from the home were recovered and returned to the resident.

According to police, the three suspects admitted to participating in the burglary. Two of them, 15-year-old males whose names have not been released, were charged — along with 18-year-old Michael Tinsley. Each faces charges of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and conspiracy to commit breaking and entering.

“This case illustrates the importance of the community and police working together,” said Officer Jessica Lawrence, a CMPD spokeswoman. “Had it not been for an alert witness, willing to call 911, chances are these suspects would still be free to prey on other members of our community.”

Anyone with additional information on the suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
