CMPD Officer Injured During Foot Chase

From The Charlotte Observer By Cleve R. Wootson Jr., February 4, 2013

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was injured after being pinned beneath a tree during an east Charlotte foot chase Monday afternoon.

Police have not released the identity of the officer, or the suspect he was chasing. The officer was taken to Presbyterian Hospital with unspecified injuries. The suspect has been arrested, and charges are pending against him.

According to a statement issued by a police spokesman, the officer, who works in the North Tryon Division, was chasing a suspect wanted for outstanding warrants on Finchley Drive, near Eastway Drive and The Plaza.

The officer followed the suspect behind a house and, as he was climbing over a fence, a dead tree trunk that was lying on the fence fell on the officer, pinning him underneath.

The officer radioed for help, and other officers pulled the trunk off him. Paramedics and firefighters treated him for his injuries later.

Police are expected to release more details later.
