CMPD Searching for Robbers Who Attacked South Park Area Man

From – October 5, 2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are looking for two men who broke into an elderly man’s apartment Sunday morning and stole his cash, computer and car.

Detectives on Wednesday released several surveillance pictures of one of the men.

Police said the robbery happened early Sunday morning at the Waterford Square apartment complex near Carmel Road in South Charlotte.

The apartment’s property manager said the two men knocked on the victim’s door at 6 a.m. and identified themselves as Charlotte police officers. The 69-year-old victim then unlocked his door.

Police said the men stole his car, computer, television and ATM cards, and they forced him to give up his PIN.

Neighbor Jareet Breeden said he would be more careful about opening his door to anyone in the future. “Yeah, especially if it’s that late at night. You want to make sure it’s someone you know,” said Breeden.

The apartment manager said she’s been telling residents about the crime and reminding them not to open their doors to anyone unless they know them personally. She also said residents have been advised to be on the lookout for any suspicious behavior.

But Breeden wasn’t aware of the robbery until Eyewitness News showed him the police report. He said he doesn’t know how he would react in a similar situation.

“You just never know. If somebody says it’s the police, and you can’t see out the peephole or something like that, you might have trusted them and opened the door, and then they force their way in, I guess,” Breeden said.

Neighbors said they’ll be on the lookout for anything suspicious until detectives make an arrest.

The two men stole the victim’s car. It’s a 2004 tan PT Cruiser, with North Carolina license plate No. ABW 7601.

doesn’t appear the victim was injured when the thieves ransacked his apartment.
