The public can weigh in today on drug dogs in schools, fliers in their kids’ book bags and ethics on the school board.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board will hold a first round of public hearings at 6 p.m. on three proposed policies, with more public comment and the board’s votes scheduled for Oct. 12.

The proposed policies:

– Authorize dog searches for drugs in schools.

– Set new rules for what kind of material from outside sources will be distributed to students through schools. Board member Tom Tate said the board wants to make sure staff isn’t distracted by spending too much time printing and distributing handouts from outside groups, and that the public understands what is and isn’t allowed.

– Outline a school board code of ethics, required by state law.

Hearings are at the Government Center, 600 E. Fourth St. Sign up on site, or call 980-343-5139 by noon. Read proposals and check the agenda at www.cms.k12.nc.us; click “Board of Education,” then “School Board Meetings and Schedules.” Policies are linked from today’s online agenda.
